New October Theme: Paranormal!

Hi all,

Everyone who went to Mackinac Island for the SCBWI Fall Conference is by now rested up and ready to draw. With Halloween just around the corner and the theme to the story that was illustrated in Matt Faulkner's Illustration Nation boot camp that dealt with an elderly neighbor woman alien who baked lemon bars, I find it appropriate and humorous that this month's theme is "PARANORMAL."

Wikipedia defines PARANORMAL as a general term t
hat designates experiences that lie outside "the range of normal experience or scientific explanation... Notable paranormal beliefs include those that pertain to ghosts, extraterrestrial, UFOs and cryptids (Bigfoot type animal creatures not yet verified by science)."

Also, there has been some excited chittering and chattering about an illustrator group starting. Area illustrators will be meeting in a few weeks in the Ann Arbor area at SCBWI illustrator's home. This will be run much like any writer crit group as we are there for support, news, and friendly critiques. All which is vital for growth. Huzzah for Joyce for getting this group going.

Another hearty huzzah goes to the Incomparable Ruth McNally-Barshaw, Awesome Ryan Hipp and Scribbler-Extraordinaire Lori Taylor for the winning entries in the Mackinac Illustration competition. Everyone's work was amazing and OUT OF THIS WORLD! Some stayed up so late that they probably did see Bigfoot or aliens outside their windows. It was a great time that bonded the illustration nation and the writers were in awe of us all. Applause here for all who attended.

Happy Sketching,
Lori Taylor
